But aren't an awful lot of folks on the sex offenders registry there for an offense that is a far cry from what people fear as pedophilia or rape? Like a 20 year old who gets arrested for having sex with his 17 year old girlfriend?

The offenders may have to provide work addresses so the numbers are higher near job centers than in the exurbs.

The closer in you go, the more offenders you find.

Do a search. When I lived in Zip Code 1, there were three pages of offenders. When we moved to the outer burbs, I found one.

I don't know whether there are more offenders in rural areas, but you sometimes don't find them in urban areas because they can't live within a certain proximity to schools and some other institutions (not sure which ones).

OP, people are more likely to be sexually assaulted by someone they know. I doubt the number of sex offenders per thousand residents is a factor. I understand wanting to consider all the options and trying to control whatever you can. But if you're worried about sexual assault you might try reading The Gift of Fear to get a clearer understanding of what you're up against.

Agree with previous poster in saying its not that serious and that OP, I mean, "the friend," needs help. Welcome to life. We live next to sex offenders, murderers, alcoholics etc all the time and without knowing most of the time

Your friend needs help as a past or present victim. I could see looking up the crime stats, but if she is dwelling on it that much, it is time for her to get help.
