Just one issue: in NJ, 95% of the hired help are college/high school age. Once Labor Day comes and goes, a huge amount of businesses close, except for possibly a few weekends. While the weather is great, and the water is warm, you may not find as much open as you would think.

Some PPs suggested the outer banks... Gorgeous in sept but beware we have been evacuated at least 3x due to hurrricanes in sept.

All depends on what you enjoy. For the 3 hour drive, dining options & the charming neighborhood I prefer Rehoboth, they also have the little Funland arcade with rides for the kiddies. Bethany also has some good places to eat and a small boardwalk, Sea Colony or VRBO can hook you up with a condo. Just got back from Avon, NC - you could probably find a good deal on a house or condo after Labor Day. Nice condo options we looked at (but didn't do) included Currituck Club, Croatan Club, Ocean Sands, communities of Club Hatteras and Kinnakeet Shores offer community pool.

Myrtle - a $350 suite will run you $100 after Sept' 1st. And the water is still warm............................

Sandbridge at the south end of Virginia Beach. Check the listings at Siebert Realty and Sandbridge Realty.

I love Ocean City, NJ. We go the last full week in September and the boardwalk shops are mostly still open (the fudge and taffy shops, ice cream, etc, all definitely open) but it has quieted down and is beautiful. We stay in the North End (rent through Fox Realty, google Fox Realty NJ), where a nicely renovated/updated condo in the beach block is roughly $800-1000/week depending on size. The North End is very easily accessible to the boardwalk, but is quiet.

Corolla, NC. Look at the Currituck Club, they have condos and a pool for those staying there. Also have a shuttle to the beach.

Cape Cod. Its a little further drive but it is beautiful that time of year.

I like rehoboth de. There are tons of posts with great info so just do a search on this forum. I just jack lingo.com to rent a beach condo 2 blocks from the beach in off season.

Since you are familiar with the jersey shore I'd go there. It's only a 3.5-4 hour drive to places like LBI and Ocean City and Cape May. Closer than NC for sure.

We are thinking we'd like to try to rent a condo at a beach somewhere after Labor Day - both to get cheaper prices and cooler weather. I'm very fair, and we have a two month old, and there's no way either one of us could enjoy going outdoors in this weather. Can anyone recommend a beach? I literally know nothing about any of the DE/NC/VA/MD beaches so I don't know where to start with VRBO. If you have any specific apt/condo complex recommendations for any of the locations, that would be wonderful, or even just cities would be good too. I'd love to be walking distance or a short drive to a beach, stay in a condo that has been updated at some point in the last 5-10 years, and it would be great to also be walking distance to stores and/or restaurants. Preferably within a 4 hour drive to DC, but the shorter the better. I'm imagining something like Long Beach Island in NJ where you can go buy fudge at night and take a walk through all the stores, etc...
