Take a trip to Ikea and look at their kitchens to get ideas, as you mentioned wanting it to be contemporary. please do not go with maple or any other light wood.

What would you do cabinet and counter wise? If I were to live here, I'd want white or light painted cabinets and marble countertops--but marble is dumb for renters as they won't care for it.
