Left my firm 6 years ago and have never looked back. I work 1/3 of the hours and make the same or more money.

No, only because I have an amazing job at a small company. I see first hand what kind of sacrifices you need to make to run a successful business. I'm not willing to do that.

I'm lucky enough to have the flexibiltiy to work from home and only work 38hrs a week and still get paid over six figures, so there is no motivation for me. I can take vacation and BE on vacation. THe owner of my company is always (and I mean always) on.

Granted, I work for one of the fastest growing, most profitable businesses around the beltway, and our owner has worked very hard for this.

Yes! I do work for myself. Started my own business five years ago and never looked back. However, my husband has the job with good benefits. If I were single, I probably wouldn't have done it

Did it, work TWICE the hours now as I ever did when I was an employee. And like pp said, you always count on the value of the business for your security. We haven't tried to sell ours, but I can see how there could be a nasty shock down that road.

What do you get? I added that up and found it was only about $20k, not including FICA tax. So my baseline for revenue i needed to generate was my comp plus value of bens plus self employment taxes plus business expenses. So far has been easy to generate. But I worked for a company that had cut benefits so much that maybe my number is much lower than other people.

No. E eryone I know who is self employed works really hard and while they have big sales, they can't sell their businesses. And they haven't saved well for retirement, banking instead on selling the business. But it's worth $0 if no one is willing to pay.

Yep. Made that decision 25 years ago and haven't looked back. Now I work in my pajamas.

Yes. I am doing it. I don't have to work as hard for the same money. Have a lot of flexibility. But have no security. So far that's not a problem. I am not a lawyer but similar professional services business.
