Because there is a large, often bitter argument being played out in a public forum, involving the board, faculty, students, etc. No matter which side you come down on, if either, it doesn't portray the type of image that UVA would like to project. I doubt this will seriously harm them in the long run, but it is definitely detracting from the school's reputation in the short term.

Well, it's a lot more complicated than that. She was "ineffective" from the point of view of some, not all of the Board. She resisted the lure of $$$$$$$ in exchange for offering online classes. In short, she resisted the corporatization of UVA. She refused to sell out.

Large, well-run organizations don't make a habit of jumping on every new fad. Yet this is exactly what led to the abrupt firing of President Sullivan -- she apparently wasn't ready to chase headfirst after David Brooks's latest fancy.

IMO this is emblematic of a larger and extremely serious crisis in public education--not just higher ed, but k-12 as well. The trend is to sell out to business interests, pure and simple.
