We did a 3-day "stay and play" pass where you stay in a hotel owned by the Morey's Piers conglomerate, and then you get an all-you-can-stand wristband for the amusement parks and water parks. We stayed in the Star Lux, which has been there since the 1950s, and it was adorable. Clean and comfortable, with no luxuries.
I don't disagree that the place is noisy and tacky. It's ... a giant amusement park at the beach. What's more, there is nothing refined and elegant in the entire town. However - and this surprised me -- it's very clean and safe. There are more derelicts pissing in doorways in Rehobeth or Dewey, for sure.
It's no "hotter" than Fenwick, The Quiet Resort (TM) or Avalon, NJ, or any other $$ mid-Atlantic beach that 13:05 prefers. Our family also spends time in the Cape, mid-coast Oregon and Camogli, Italy. So la-di-da.
Sometimes you want chilled baby cucumber compote with local, heirloom sweet onion, and sometimes you want fried Oreos.
Actually it is a lot hotter than Fenwick, Avalon, NJ, or certainly Cape Cod. The presence of concrete, machinery, many many businesses and the boardwalk make it far hotter than places without those features.
