Then look at how closely the back of the 3rd row of the Highlander is to the rear of your car (way closer than many of the other 3rd row seating we looked at). In my opinion, it is not safe to have my passengers around a foot from the rear of the car. That can't be safe in a rear accident.

Those 2 details immediately ruled out the Highlander for our family.


I understand those concerns. And most vehicles with 3rd row seating are changing designs to meet those safety concerns. The Highlander got the best rating for rear impact safety from IIHS and has 3rd row side air curtains and additional crush zone reinforcement in the back.

The Escalade is the same as the Tahoe, which was too big for us (2 kids, 2 big dogs)

We LOVE our Acadia.

We test drove the Acadia with captains chairs a couple times and really liked it. In the end, though, we went with the minivan because I just felt like the overall practicality was better, e.g., auto sliding doors, a fair amount of space plus a deep well behind the 3rd row, seemed roomier inside, etc. I enjoyed driving both. So if you're anti-minivan, I would definitely check out the Acadia (or Traverse or Enclave since they're basically the same).

Acadia/Traverse/Enclave. More space than the Tahoe because it's a unibody chassis. Obviously not as much of a truck.

This does not have captain's row option but we love it. We have the Mercedes suv..the third row has a ton of leg room..I bring this up as we checked out some of then"larger" SUVs and due to the large back wheels.the third row had no leg room. We then purchased a Thule for the car for trips with a ton of luggage and it has made life so much easier as we needed the really large suburban for decent third seat legroom and those were impossible to park anywhere.

MOST SUVs nowadays have a bench seat for the second row, and a removable becnh in the rear. I know the Toyota Sequioa used to offer captians in the second as an option.

Minivan out of the question?

Title says it all. We currently have a Tahoe. If we cant find anything better we will prob get another Tahoe but want to get opinions on other options.
