See that is my concern. The FARMS are high and a chunk of the hispanic population is brought from other areas. Is the quality of education directly impacted with these factors?

Sequoia, placed among the very wealthy, is almost 50% FARMs - and about 40% Hispanic. The community is very supportive of its school, despite the possible impact of language and poverty. So there's the disconnect.

Do your research. It's a stone's throw away. We actually looked at home that was REZONED from Magruder to Sherwood.

I lived in Olney. I have friends in Derwood. I know the area, and as a teacher am familiar with the schools.

We're zoned for another elementary school that feeds into Redland MS and Magruder HS. We have a son going into 8th grade at Redland and he really likes it. The interactions Ive had with the teachers and counselors there have been all positive (and the new-ish principal is well liked).

While I dont currently have any kids attending Magruder, the feedback Ive rec'd from the neighborhood parents and kids was all positive.

I like living in Derwood but we opted for a home built in 1985 on about 3 acres because we wanted to put in a pool (which we did). We have terrific neighbors, my commute is good and we love coming home to peace and quiet. We don't use the schools but its for religous reasons not anything negative about the schools... we just wanted a Catholic education for our kids. As I said, my neighbors love the schools and the number of kids in public far outweigh the number in private in my neighborhood. Lots of kids play sports at OBGC which is really convenient too. You will also be super close to Olney swim center which is nice for lessons, winter swim, etc.

Apologies ... the correct website is http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/. Anyhow - Thank you for your comments on Derwood. Have you heard anything about this new neighborhood? We were debating whether to pursue something like that or an older home in Derwood. Any advice...being a Derwood resident?

Two of my neighbors have kids in the Derwood schools and they are very happy. My neighbors very bright, very studious son did great at Magruder and he's currently at Stanford with a scholarship.

All in all, Derwood is a really great place to live.

The "school district" is the entire county. If some moms loves Sequoyah then I would trust them over a website (mcps.org? what is that?).

We are looking at buying a house in Derwood. The kids would be going to the Sequoyah - Redland - Magruder school district and we were wondering if you have any advice regarding it. According to MCPS.org, this isn't a great school district, yet I've heard from some moms that they love Sequoyah. I heard there is great turnover with teachers but don't know how true that is.

Please share any thoughts and provide any feedback.

We're looking at the the neighborhood being built on Bowie Mill/Muncaster Mill.
