Yeah. I love dogs. But that whole Sarah Mclaughlan mawkish embrace the horror thing is just too much for me. They're really preaching to the converted with me--I have a couple of shelter cats. Enough already. I thought the show was going to be more of a fun slice of life type production about dog ownership. I think I'll skip watching that one On Demand.

It was bad - there were tears in my eyes the whole way through. Except as someone mentioned, the bit about the cloned Lab - that was one funny/crazy couple.

We also adopted our dog from death row at a shelter in GA. We adopted him sight unseen and had him transported to Alexandria. We have completely fell in love with him, though he's larger than what we had originally wanted . He's so loving, it's magical and when I look into his big brown eyes, I think about all the great dogs who never get their wish - to become a part of a family. After our 5 yr. Old falls asleep, he lies next to him with his arms over him. He was one day away from being put down. He's just your typical big hound, probably set loose by a hunter.

I can't watch a movie that has a gas chamber scene, I'll think about for months. I have an enormous soft soft in my heart for dogs (and cats).

Ive seena LOT of bad stuff in my day but I could not watch that.

I wept through most of it. (Except the cloning part, which made me laugh because it was so ridiculous.) I have a purebred dog, and we love him, but we neutered him. I wish there was more active population control for animals. Then there wouldn't be so many unwanted dogs or cats. Except for licensed breeders, why should ANYONE be allowed to have dogs who have not been spayed or neutered?

Wow. There's no way I could watch it. I can barely read through this thread. I didn't know about this documentary prior to this thread and now I'm sad that I do.

The gas chamber scene was horrific - I had no idea dogs could sound like that. And the puppies were just put on top of the bodies of the others - it was sick.

That is why I get so riled up on here when people start asking about breeders for this type of dog or that type - there are so many purebred dogs in shelters just waiting for homes.

I watched it last night. The gas chamber part was incredibly sad. I cried. The howling was awful.

I loved the grief group where the woman said, She wasn't my child, or my parent, she was my dog. She was my dog. It really came across how special that relationship is/was.

It was very moving - and I have two shelter cats.

It is a terrible problem in this country. Everyone should make sure to always neuter and spay their animals (cats too!) and get their pets from a shelter. "Don't breed or buy while shelter animals die." It is horrific. We have 3 who are shelter rescues or give-aways, but the problem (of the over pet population) seems to be always with us.

I can't watch this sort of thing. We do what we can - all our pets have come from shelters.

I read the review in the Post which mentioned that scene and decided I couldn't watch it. I think gas chambers are only in poorer states where they are totally overwhelmed. AFAIK, it's by injection elsewhere. We saved our WV rescue dog from the gas chamber.

Has anyone else watched this? I just watched the scene of the dogs getting "euthanized" via the gas chamber and it is absolutely horrific. NOT painless. Truly awful. I was weeping watching/listening to it.

How can this still be legal in this country? It's nothing short of barbaric and is not a kind reflection on this country.
How can people not spay/neuter animals and be so careless to let it get to the point that it is at in some of these areas?

[And before the "they are just dogs" poster chimes in about why I don't worry about human causes, I do. I give to plenty of causes, have sponsored numerous women through work training programs in Sudan, among other things.]
