The composites hold up really really well, and are environmentally-friendly being mostly recycled materials. The other material I would consider (more expensive) is ipe.

Synthetic lasts longer with less up-keep. But it costs more.

Our trex has lasted for over 10 years with no maintenance and still looks good.
