I was there over 10 years ago. Stayed at the Grand Hyatt Nusa Dua and it was wonderful. Explored the island, Ubud was lovely. Shopping and food were amazing.

We were there in 2009 for our honeymoon. We split our time between Ubud and Jimbaran. Kuta is definitely too built up, and it was the only part of Bali that I didn't like. We loved staying in jimbaran at the Intercontinental. They have several beachside eateries in Jimbaran.

We loved shopping in Seminyak, too.

I would go to Tanah Lot at sunset and leave plenty of time by yourselves (no guide) to enjoy the beautiful tidepools.

OP here, just DH and I, no kids. The hotels I am considering are only beachfront. We are looking in Nusa Dua, I've been reading that Kuta beach is now entirely too built up and touristy, but I've never been....

go on the tours of the temples and rice fields...

stay near the beach...really beautiful.

I LOVE Bali! I spent several months there over 10 years ago, and *I think* it was around August. Are you bringing kids? Ages? (I'm gathering no, but that would make a big difference in what you decide). From my experience as a budget backpacker there, I wouldn't recommend an all inclusive. There are so many easy, great places to eat and I wouldn't want to limit myself to one resort. I also stayed in Kuta Beach, which is the "backpacker" (aka cheap) place to stay- you might be looking at other areas. Everything is (OK, was) dirt cheap. I am SO JEALOUS!!! The shopping would be great had I had more money at the time. If I went now, that's probably what I would focus on.

We're planning on two weeks in Bali in late Aug/early Sept. Has anyone been at that time?

What are the really memorable things that you did/saw that we should do? I just booked our flights and haven't pulled the trigger yet for the hotel because I am still deciding between doing something all-inclusive or not.

We don't usually do all-inclusive when we travel. We usually explore and eat anywhere interesting, but we are looking forward to spending some time on this trip doing nothing and just relaxing on the beach, at the pool and getting massages, so the thought of all inclusive for those kinds of days would be nice....

I still think we'd leave the resort plenty to explore and eat "native" like we usually do so I am not sure all inclusive is worth it. It does sound appealing though. We are not super foodies and overly picky. We don't eat at Applebee's, but we are not regulars at Citronelle.
