Prep work, baking, sauces, etc. And when it rains or is too cold. But cooking outside sure makes clean up a lot easier in the summer.
A couple of things that make grilling easy - good lighting, a gas grill that is linked to the gas line rather than a tank, and proximity to the kitchen. I would love an outdoor kitchen but I am not sure it is practical for the DC area so we settle for the grill.

We have a high end Weber gas grill. We use it probably 4-5 days a week spring and summer, 2-3 days a week in the fall and once a week in the winter if it's not too cold. It's not a novelty, just our preferred method of cooking. It has a burner on it too so we can boil corn and things like that. We also eat on the patio as often as we can, probably 5 days a week the last 2 months.

I was given a very fancy grill for Christmas 6 years ago. We use it about once a week in the spring and fall, and once every two weeks in the winter and summer (at the pool all the time in the summer).

We bought a cheap-ass grill ($200) Memorial Day weekend and we've used it every weekend (and some weeknights) since.
I WISH we were in the position to get something expensive and never use it
