In which states is this not customary?

From an individual? I've received similar gifts, but they've been from a whole class.

pp, the insinuation that these amount to bribes for grades is insane. For one thing, grades are sent home the day these gifts are given, so there's no possibility of quid pro quo. for another, who cares about grades in elementary school, save for some of these AAP nutters?

in any case, the solution pursued at our school is there's a class gift that is pooled by the room parents. there are class funds for this.

Yes, appreciating your kids' teachers is a "thing". Did you grow up in a cave?

Um, yes. It's pretty universal. Started in preschool. Did your progeny not attend preschool, or did you just stiff the teachers?

[list]Giving a gift is a choice not a requirement. Give if it is right for your family.

Did you not do anything for your child's teacher in their other school? Unless the teacher was an absolute dud, I would have my child write a letter (or dictate it) and give a nice gift (flowers, giftcard, etc).

Yes, we do year-end gifts. Usually $25 Target card and nice handwritten note from child.

If you liked the teacher and thought that he/she did a good job, a letter to the teacher and copied to the principal and assistant principal is a nice "gift" to receive.

We've always done something. Agree that a card is "enough," but we typically slip some cash in, too.

Yes. Our Room Parent collected money and presented the gift to the teacher yesterday at the end-of-year party.

It is very common. Anything from a heartfelt note to a gift card is typical.
