I can't bring myself to watch the show because I saw Lena's movie Tiny Furniture and hated her and her character so much that I'm ruined for anything she's in.

I think that's the point. She's not trying to make Hannah beautiful or likable. Hannah is SUPPOSED to be maddening.

I love the show. I even love Hanna. I think it is brilliant and it makes perfect sense that uptight, perfectionistic people would hate it.

God, I love this show.

I like the characters other than Hanna better than I like her, but I care the most about her, if that makes sense. She's maddeningly immature and far, far, far too close a portrait of someone I know really well. I think that's why it's so hard to stop watching. We all know young women who are or were like this at one point in their lives. Sadly, my friend is still acting like Hanna at 35 and it's really lost its charm. There's probably some small part of me that hopes Hanna will give me the satisfaction of growing up (eventually) -- perhaps as a kind of proxy for my friend, who doesn't seem headed in that direction.

I actually like seeing the struggles and insecurities Hanna is facing. She's finally being forced to grow up and experience the real world.

Girls is growing on me. At first it was just too depressing but it does seem to be moving in the direction (very slowly though) of increased self-knowledge. Acting and dialogue are wonderful.
Oh sorry, I meant a c. It was actually spelled with a "k" but it sounded the same either way.

My husband and I throughly enjoy this show. It's well written, but even more than that, it reminds us of some of the people and scenarios we knew/experienced in our early 20s, just out of college. Yes, Hanna is self centered and self absorbed, but a lot of spoiled college kids are just that. And she isn't the greatest friend, but she is sincere and well meaning.

Ultimately, Hanna - and all of the characters - are terribly flawed. But that's real life and at least in the show, there are a lot of laughs that accompany the mishaps.

I think they're portraying her as naive and oblivious to the realities of having to pay for things on your own. Maybe she'll "get it" when she finally has to take care of herself, once Marnie kicks her out. It's frustrating and annoying, and I've hated moochers as much as the next person, but I still don't think she's awful and think it's forgivable because she's not "evil," she's just still clueless and hasn't yet been forced to truly grow up. Some people are more mature and self aware from a young age, and some people just don't get it until later. But I totally see what you're saying.

I don't think she'd listen. That's part of her flaw. Jessa tries to be the hard ass, but is moved by her boss's statements towards the end. The women are there, but Hannah is too busy trying to create stories that she can't listen.

Despicable? No, i don't see that. I see her as a struggling, still immature young woman who has a lot of insecurities and still has a lot of things to work on. She is not a bad friend but has not always been a good friend, and has certainly had periods of being self-centered as she deals with figuring out who she is, who she wants to be, and how she's going to pay the bills. It's an honest portrayal of someone who's not perfect, but i still think she's likeable in spite of it all. I like and can relate to many of the female characters, and myself knew versions of them when i graduated college and was living in NYC.

I know Girls on HBO has been ripped apart on DCUM before, but i enjoy it. Last night's episode made me feel like the writers (intentionally or not) have succeeded in making the most despicable character on television in Hanna. I don't mean her body, which is what the other thread went off on, but rarely if ever have you seen a female protagonist be so self-centered, narcissistic, cold and "bad-friendish" without having any typical fairy tale evil characteristics, like being a witch. It's truly an accomplishment. I'm curious what others thought.
