On a per hour basis it's less expensive than most kid activities. I figure my kid spends a minimum of 6 hours a week at practice/games for at least 45 weeks/year. So that works out to about $10-12/hour. And it keeps them active and occupied, gives them the skills to play on their high school teams, and at least my kid enjoys it. So it's worth it for us, but maybe not for your family.

Most of the kids on my DCs MCPS HS team play for Bethesda or Potomac so doesn't seem to be a private school thing. Some of the Bethesda teams list the high schools attended by the players (AC Bethesda used to, maybe still does) so you can see where they go to school. As I recall on that team there are a bunch of kids at DeMatha so I guess there is a dose of at least Catholic schools.

When my DC tried out for Bethesda last year they said it was $2500/year (plus the extras). He joined another club that is about $2400/year plus about $200 for uniform (not including warmups, but practice jerseys were provided by they club), and maybe $300/season for tournaments (have done mostly local tournaments, 6-8/year, so limited travel expenses).

No idea on hockey but most of the fees for soccer go for league fees and the professional coaches. And soccer is year round - we've got a couple of weeks off in the summer and a couple of weeks off in November so it's a decent amount of work for the coaches. Plus there are fees for the practice and game fields. Our club (and Bethesda, not sure about Potomac) has paid to install a couple of turf fields.

Bethesda Soccer =BSC = Bring Some Cash

starts at $3500 includes a week of summer camp then add on uniforms, travel, travel for coach, warm ups, jackets, t shirts back pack etc etc

It never ends.

The house league just over 1500+ per season, but it's a long one from Sept - March. I just got off the phone with a friend who DD plays travel soccer to the tune of $2700, which doesn't inclue hotel or airfare. So again soccer seems expensive for what it is.

Same here. I would have thought soccer would be less, because it uses less equipment than hockey. Are the fees for Bethesda Soccer in the same price range?
