Duncan Hines and Betty Crocker do make a pink ready made icing. I believe it's usually strawberry flavored, but they do make a pink vanilla Funfetti icing as well.

2 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1/4 tsp. salt
4 egg whites
1 tsp. vanilla extract
3/4 tsp. cream of tartar
3/4 cup strawberries puréed
In a 2-qt. saucepan, stir together 2 1/4 cups sugar, corn syrup, salt, strawberries and 1/2 cup water; attach a candy thermometer to the side of the pan and heat over medium-high heat. Meanwhile, place egg whites, vanilla, and cream of tartar in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a whisk, and mix on low speed until frothy. Increase speed to medium-high and beat egg whites until soft peaks form. With mixer running, slowly sprinkle in remaining sugar and beat whites until stiff peaks begin to form; turn mixer off. When sugar mixture reaches 248°, return mixer to medium-high speed and slowly drizzle the hot sugar syrup in a small, steady stream into the egg whites, making sure not to let the syrup hit the whisk or side of the bowl; continue beating until stiff peaks form and mixture is still slightly warm, about 3–4 minutes.

The Martha Stewart baking handbook has a pink buttercream recipe which is a basic buttercream + strawberry preserves. I think this is the same recipe here http://www.marthastewart.com/357618/strawberry-meringue-buttercream
I would use pasteurized egg whites.

They have colored powders/flavors to add to white frosting now. Sold next to the frostings in the baking aisle. Although I cannot imagine it would taste so good!

If you make it yourself, after you blend the butter and confectionars sugar together, beat in some mashed up strawberries.

Just make a buttercream (butter, confectioners sugar, milk, vanilla - yes, it's fattening as hell, but i assume you don't eat a lot of sweets so once won't hurt) and add some gel food coloring, available at the grocery store or Michael's.

Sweetapolita has a really pretty blog, if you're interested.

Buy the white frosting and use either the juice from maraschino cherries or a few drops of red food coloring to make it pink.
You can also make the cupcakes pink the same way - just use white cake mix (no egg yolks) and a few drops of red food coloring.
