This photo is provocative. So many breastfeeding supporters, myself included, draw a line at what I call the exhibitionist breastfeeders, the women who don't cover their breasts when they nurse. Sorry but the people who chose this photo were naive to think that it wasn't going to cause trouble. Talk about self-sabotaging.

As for the women in uniform, no, that's not the issue. It's the breasts, stupid.

I agree, that the shot didn't need to be taken with the eyes focused so directly onto her cleavage. Of course it's wonderful both women are breastfeeding, and that the one on left is able to do feed both at once. But the way it's posed does draw attention to her breasts first.

So...is no one asking how old the "babies" are? I can't see a picture of the mom nursing two 5month olds with her shirt in the same place causing the same issues.

Women in the military are required to stay fit. Six months after giving birth you have to be down to your typical weight and pass the fitness test.

This is a posed picture, and those shirts are just boxy tshirst, not fitted. They could have pulled it down a little over the cleavage so the focus was on the babies, not her breasts and cleavage. If they had I would bet money that no one would even be talking about this photo.

HERE is the main issue, all of the pictures of breast feeding moms (time magazine, this one of the military) are of attractive fit women. If the pictures were of ugly and fat women there wouldn't be as much outrage. Ask any man to tell you the truth after they see young, fit amd attractove women with there breasts out what they think. DH agrees and I too BFed my kids but wouldn't want to do it out in the open in front of collegues. I would think its ok to BF and talk with maybe a cover up.

But don't you think it might be hard to cover up a lot when you have to nurse two babies at the same time?

I think, perhaps, that if the picture looked more like most of us look when breast feeding in public (somewhat off to the side, not displaying cleavage, but reasonably covered....) the picture wouldn't be so upsetting.

No issue here with women nursing, but sorry. Nursing like that is unbecoming.

That's not the issue. People are saying its a disgrace to the uniform. As a Navy vet, who breastfed two babies while in uniform, I'm disgusted that this is an issue. Disgusted, but not surprised.

But it is the issue. No one is saying a word about the other woman, just the one grinning at the camera with almost her entire bare breasts on display while in uniform. That is the unprofessional part, not the breastfeeding in uniform.

The angle is the issue. Let's not play dumb. It doesn't matter what she was wearing...when you look at the picture you don't see a mother nursing, you see a woman with her breasts hanging out.

Oh ok...there are the babies, but why are your breasts hanging out in public? You don't care...ok that's fine but don't act stupid as to why others might raise their eyebrows and call you a disgrace. At least if you are a dumb teenager then the lack of class is understandable, but if you are trying to present yourself as a professional then I can't take your seriously with most of your breasts hanging out.

The second pic of the mother nursing is fine. It's a mother nursing, not a peep show.
