Yes, I concur. This teacher behaves like all teachers are dumb mules that do what they are told to do even if it's illogical and inappropriate for a child. Why else would this teacher accept for a moment the premise that a student working 3 or 4 grade levels above in her math class should be forced to stay they for a whole year and repeat the same process all over again the next year ... until there is equilibrium and everyone else is close to par.
Perhaps, she will learn some critical thinking skills as she "assiduously" prepares her "lesson plans" in arithematic for her classroom children -- then prepares for how to assess and evaluate these kids a year later based on those lessons plans.
I hope all teachers aren't so disgruntled, bitter and unhappy. The self-identified teachers on this board are more often than not illogical, overly emotional, hyperbolic and rude. Hope you're not in my child's class!

If MCPS math teachers can't evaluate students for math competency why are they getting wage increases in this era of cuts? Primary school mathematics, for example, hasn't changed in 200 years, regardless of the curricular flavor de jour?

The teacher said there were extra materials available that he could use when he finished his regular work. He never did go to those extra materials, probably because he was still new to reading, he liked to socialize, he liked pleasing his teacher and fellow students, and he probably felt proud that he was so smart. So instead, he helped the kids that sat near him with their math. Do you honestly think most boys, on their own, are going to sit quietly in a corner and teach themselves multiplication tables, when the class is on addition. That's just not practical. Is the US going to produce the top scientists and engineers with this kind of system or are they going to just hope to import them from China, India, etc? The answer is obvious. Further, this school system is just going to rely on parents like me to do their job with supplemental education. They are hoping that if they can just marginalize about 10-15% of the student population, that minority can't do anything about it. They are probably correct in this assumption, but they are hurting the country in the long term.

They are just standards to be expected at each grade level.
