Do you know anyone who is interested/able to sign up for Sign Language classes, age range is K-3rd Wednesday at 2pm in Oakton? We are so excited to take this class but they need a few more kids in order to run it. It is through https://www.compassclasses.com

PP here. I know of a homeschool group where one of the moms is a professional artist. She runs her group's weekly art lessons and she is fabulous. The kids are in tiny groups of about 5 or 6 at a time, so they are really getting some top notch individualized instruction.

Most of the homeschoolers I know use online school or purchase accredited curriculum once the kids move past early elementary school.

Or they rely heavily on coops, where the biologist mom supervises science and the accountant mom oversees math, etc.

Since they don't teach with any structure or educational goals unschoolers can be very behind in school very early in life, especially in areas like math and grammar.

Also check out VAHomeschoolers on-line. They are more "inclusive" while HEAV is more "Christian".

Send an email to sharenet "at" att "dot" net and you will get a twice-monthly newsletter that lists tons of groups and activities for DC area homeschoolers. There are 100's of secular homeschoolers in this area.

Probably getting this wrong, but my impression of an unschooler is a child who isn't schooled in a formal way anywhere whether at home or at a school. They just learn through whatever comes their way in life. In practice I think it means a lot of teaching through doing and turning daily tasks into lessons. Unschoolers believe they are teaching differently by presenting more spontaneous, real life, and hands on learning verses formal school where you sit down at a desk. A lot of unschoolers seem to travel a lot to give children new opportunities for learning.

There is a very active yahoo group called Nova Unschoolers that is a pretty mixed group (not just "unschoolers"), certainly many secular homeschoolers.

I'm guessing that if she's on the left wing of the homeschool movement and dislikes the religious folk, the military won't be her cuppa either. KWIM?
