Yes, pots need holes for drainage. You might be able to drill one yourself, I'd do some online research before charging ahead, though.

Wow thank you for the very helpful posts! Obviously I know nothing about our green friends. I think I may just get a pot with a hole or maybe even try to drill a hike in the pot I have!
With the pots with holes, do you just place them on a plate so that water does not drip?

Some plants are very uncomfortable sitting in water; they are prone to root rot and just need good drainage. Examples of these plants are succulents, heathers, lavendar, citrus trees. Other plants (classic examples are ferns, african violets), really don't mind staying in moist soil. In general, you will have to be cautious about overwatering, which is a concern for all plants, but especially those without drainage.

If you try this (i would not put a plant in a pot without a hole because I know what I'm doing) but if you try this and you find your plant is getting black tips on the ends of its leaves, that means the plant is getting too much water.

You should probably do both. I speak as one who has killed several plants through inadequate drainage.

I was given a beautiful small plant that I want to put in a handmade ceramic pot but the pot has no hole for drainage. Will my plant be ok? Do pots need a hole? Thanks.
