6th graders need a pass advanced on the SOL and a 91 on the Iowa Test to take Algebra I in middle school.

Don't suppose you know if someone can walk in and test for Algebra over the summer, do you? I'm not even certain it's a fit for DC, just considering options.

Standardized test scores in math have been high so far (maybe 97% - 99% don't remember exactly), but it was a different set of tests. We're not really interested in acceleration, but a good fit.

Ok NP - honors classes are open to anyone who wishes to take them. Math, however, differs starting in Middle School. You have to test into a math class - 7th grade math placements depend on both SOL scores and the Iowa Algebra test. In 7th grade, you have regular Math 7, Math 7 Honors, or Algebra 1.

If we transfer DC from private to FFX middle school, but didn't apply for AAP (unexpected transfer) can DC just sign up for honors classes? We just have private school standardized test scores (ERBs- high scores) and good grades.

Can anyone explain why Algebra and Geometry would be listed for 8th grade, but Algebra NOT listed as a 7th grade option?

Yes, you can refer your child. My dc missed the cutoff in 2nd grade by a couple of points but we didn't do anything about it because we were happy with the school. We referred dc for 6th grade Level 4 services with a WISC and was accepted. She will be in Level 4 for 6, 7, and 8 and because we kept dc in language immersion in elementary school, dc will also be in immersion in middle school. Dc is very ahead in math, so we don't anticipate problems with the compacted math portion.

Your daughter can also select honors courses in middle school without going through the AAP referral process. No, they wouldn't be AAP Center classes but the classes are still honors classes.

You will need to refer her with an exam score, not just grades from report cards/progress reports.

DD didn't make it into the Level IV center in second grade but was placed in the Young Scholars program at school and has been in the program since 3rd grade, receiving level 3 services. DD is now in 5th grade and was wondering if I can get her into the AAP level 4 center when she goes to middle school (7th and 8th grade). For those with experience or knowledge on this, does she need to retake the CogAT/NNAT or maybe take the WISC? Or can we just apply to the Middle school since she already receives level 3 services and her grades are only As and Bs with strong SOL scores over the years?
