Modern 10 year olds can't tie their shoes well. I wouldn't worry about your guy on that one.

We did velcro belts for private school as my son was not great at manipulating the belt. He is really thin so we have difficulty finding pants long enough that are not too wide.

FYI, we are in private and my kid could do all the above and a little more and we felt behind. Fine Motor comes into play at the end of the year. We are definitely on the lower end of knowledge for k.

It's helpful if your child can hold a marker/pencil with a three point finger grip rather than just grasping it. Children really can't start writing effectively until they have mastered that.

Thank you for such a thorough reply! He can do it all except scissors and laces. I'll work with him over the summer on cutting. I don't think he's ready for laces but he's fine with Velcro shoes. I've never put a belt on him and don't plan to anytime soon, but I can start practicing with those types of buckles.

I don't want to push him, but I also don't want to create a frustrating situation for both him and the teacher, if he's expected to know something but doesn't.

Scissors -- yes, proficiently no.

Printing -- not so much, but knowing how to hold a pencil and knowing at least some/most letters. Kindergarten is a time for learning to write letters (or practice them).

Writing full sentences -- no, but knowing the sounds that go with letters so that they can make "words" (i.e. strings of letters that represent words).

Dressing -- zippers = yes; laces = no (although they want the kids to know this, it's not required if you put the kids in velcro/bungee cord shoes); buttons = working toward it, but proficiency not necessary; snaps = yes if they wear any clothes with snaps.

Really, the kindergarten teachers are aware that kids are not perfect at this age. They understand that this is a process of development.

My only caution to you is DO NOT send your kid to school with a belt unless they are ABSOLUTELY proficient with it. One little boy ended up peeing in his pants the first week of school b/c he didn't know how to get the belt undone. I can imagine the stress he was under trying to get his pants off and not being able to hold it. Plus the embarrasment for something that his parents should have foreseen.

My son's skills are not the strongest, but I think he's average. What, realistically speaking, does he have to be proficient at before starting kindergarten?

Printing upper and lower case letters?
Writing full sentences? (talking about physical skill and endurance, not academic knowledge)
Cutting proficiently with scissors?
Dressing himself, including snaps, buttons, zippers, laces?
