The choice is not which class, but which school. Many people choose private schools because of these outrageous class sizes.

I work in a school where there are between 25-27 kids in each K class. There is one aide who is shared among the 4 K classes. Not ideal but they do the best they can. We also have quite a few parent volunteers who read one on one with the kids each week which helps.

However- every additional child is a drain on her resources and attention. Besides- with mainstreaming you have more varied extremes.

My kid's K teacher is phenomenonal and the aide is wonderful too. If i asked them if 7 more kids would effect their teaching ability (up to 28) they would definitely answer yes. We are only allowed 23 before a new K class is formed.

I think a lot depends on the teacher. my son had 18 in his class last year and it was a disaster b/c the teacher had no classroom management skills. This year, he has 27 with one teacher and no aide, and it is excellent b/c the teacher's style is so much better.

I wouldn't like it. My son's public K class has 21 kids and 1 aide and 1 teacher---in addition to a floating reading teacher.

I could not image 7 more children. yikes.

OP here! Thanks for all the replies and for making me feel a bit better about a big class. My son is very outgoing and extremely social and so I worry about him goofing off and getting 'lost' in a big class. I worry that he will fall behind and no one will notice because the class is so big.

The assistant is full time so there will be one lead teacher and one assistant in the class. Thanks for the responses!

Yes, this is us this year. It is really amazing how well run the classroom is with that number of kids.

Yes, if you read anything of Montessori, she actually feels that large class size is good since it promotes independence in children. Of course M classes are slightly different because the materials are designed for the children to teach themselves, but I think that class size is ok especially with an assistant.

Totally depends on the teacher, which you might know going in.

Yes. If you have a teacher AND an assistant you are golden. We have that many kids in our K class and no assistant. Is the assistant full time? part time? Basically with a full time assistant you are getting a good ratio for learning and helping with math, reading etc.

Thanks!
