I have a ll.m. and it certainly helped me, and it was not in tax. I went from a TTT firm to BIGLAW even with crappy JD grades at a lame law school. ten years later, it is still paying off. I know I was lucky, but it happens.

LLM is a totally worthless degree OP. You bought the GW marketing bait and wasted your money.

That being said GW should help you find a job if they tricked you into doing a LLM.

If you are from another country, contact the GW law school career services department for contacts in an international firm with clients or offices in your home country. Those types of firms might be interested in hiring someone with your native language skills and understanding of the culture, maybe here in DC or in an office back home. Times are tough but good luck.

I think you need to be a little more specific on how you would like to help people - e.g., in regard to their housing, civil rights, adoptions? I am assuming maybe you are originally from another country. If you are not a U.S. citizen, many federal jobs may be out. I think the suggestion to look into corporate law deparments may be a good one.

OP, you say that you want to help people, but are you clear on whether you want to help people by practicing law in the US? If not, why do you mention your LLM? That's not really a useful degree if you're not planning to practice law. If being a lawyer is your goal, are you a member of the bar somewhere? If you're not, you need to be focused on passing a bar somewhere. And, to be blunt, in any event, you need to work on developing the language, writing and analytical skills to enable you to identify and clearly express, in specific and concrete terms, how you would like to "help people" to DCUM or [gasp], to potential employers.

Not true 19:33. Believe it or not, there are legal jobs that do not require a JD.

OP I'd look into corporate law departments; think contracts, licensing, business risk analysis, etc. On job websites you can start by searching those key words. There are plenty of corporations who would love to have you.

I thought the reason to get an LLM was to get a subject matter specialty.

You need to have some focus other than "I want a job" as lawyer jobs come in a lot of flavors. People that work at nonprofits focused on environmental laws think they are helping people. So do "ambulance chasers."
