AA County has two Charters. We have had kids in both.

Monarch Academy - K-8 - Great environment weak academics.
Chesapeake Science Point 6-12 Great if your kids is a Math & Science wiz. Otherwise a mediocre school all around.

Yes, PG county has several charter schools. As mentioned above, it is by county/school district, so check out the web-site for your county public school system for more information.

They're authorized by the local school boards. Montgomery has traditionally been very resistant to charters, though I believe the first one is opening soon.

yes they do - they have a lot in Baltimore. One of the reasons they are not more wide spread is the strength of the Maryland Teachers Union - Maryland has a provision in its charter law that requires their staffs to be unionized. One of the highest performing Middle Schools in Baltimore (and it ranks up there for the state) is a public charter school - Ujima Village Academy.
