Subject: Maryland's #1 High School ranked Lower than VA's #3
This is just nonsense. They count the number of kids taking (or being pushed into) AP classes and then compare it against the student body.
It has nothing to do with test scores, what kids have retained, how prepared they are for college, or whether they even enroll in college.
A huge fraud.

Yup -- that's pretty much all they do these days, but they're making a ton of money off it. Look at how people jumped on this thread as soon as the listings came out. Nobody ever went broke overestimating the anxiety of American parents.

I noticed that George Mason and Marshall H.S. are both IB program schools. Are they considered equivalent to AP programs, and accepted by college programs for credits? My understanding was that AP is widely accepted whereas IB programs are still being challenged by some U.S. colleges and might not earn the students the same college credits.

What's scary is that only 2 DC schools are even ranked, the highest is #700 nationally and one of the two has a 2% pass rate on AP exams. So while we MD and VA people argue about the merits of #53 vs #55 take a moment to put that in perspective.

As Jay Mathews says, just to be ranked is a good thing. Being in the top 100-200 nationally is a pretty big deal and not sure there is that much of a difference between #57 and #83, or whatever. We are lucky that we have so many schools on both sides of the river where kids can get a great education.
I also see test scores affecting the ranking not just AB/IB

It's been a couple years since I had read this, but in calculating the rankings, I believe there is also a factor relating to the percentage of economically disadvantaged students.

I guess the mandatory tax increases and huge budgets didn't really make that much of a difference vs VA's lower taxes and different financial spending and tax philosophy
