I'm not sure where the 99% figure came from either, but I am happy to see Marshall up there. It is definitely a hidden gem in FCPS.

GCM in the top 10 does not surprise me. It was the first IB school in Fairfax County, and was rising in the ranks even in 90's when I went to school. It also was one of the smallest high schools in the county back then...

Clearly there is something odd about the statistics they are citing. The IB participation rate at Marshall is more like 60% with about 75%+ pass rate.

Other schools' stats seem off as well. I think the methodology is questionable.

Those who like to deconstruct these studies should have a field day.

FWIW, I'd be curious as to how the IB participation rate at George Mason or George Marshall was determined to be 99%. It doesn't sound right to me, and I assume it has an impact on their top rankings.

Of course, the Jay Matthews "Challenge Index" (i.e., the "Newsweek" study) that the Arlington posters love to trot out has its own, serious flaws.

But, for example, Yorktown High scores higher on every measure than 22nd-ranked Falls Church High. Am I missing something??

Because even though falls church has a huge amount of poor and minorities vs yorktown's very white and rich, it scores better in test scores.
