It sounds like an awful incident. I've been mugged in that area, and it was because I had my cell phone out. That level of violence wasn't used against me, and neighbors were quick to help.
I agree that PoP readers are entitled whiners, however.

I've lived at 17th and P for 11 years. I've been mugged twice, had my car stolen once and broken into 4 times, and had my house burglarized once. To say crime is somehow uncommon in this "good" of DC is naive and silly.
