Yes, a lot of events are for those who SAH, but you can volunteer to be an organizer and plan something at a park, a playdate at home, mom's night out, etc. I have made a TON of friends through this group.
Did you stay in touch with any parents you met in your birthing classes? Reach out to them!
Join a Gymboree, My Gym, etc. class. They have classes on Saturdays and Sundays and it's a great way to meet other parents. The classes are also broken down by age, so you will meet others in the same boat as you (and most of the parents who go to Gymboree on the weekends work outside the home).
Advertise for a playgroup on DCUM and/or Craigslist. Make it by age and location so you meet friends who live closer by and have kids in the same age range as yours.
If your LO is in daycare, ask one of the moms to go out for coffee sometime, or invite them over for a playdate.
Probably the biggest way I've met people is through playdates through all of the above. I have planned and attended probably 50 playdates in the past year!
Good luck!
All of the above. Seriously.
