I went to Craigslist and after daily looking for a while, in a three month span I bought 4 dresser. the most expensive was $250 (almost 50 years old and works perfectly), the others were $40, $80 and $100. they are all real wood, all have dovetail joints, wood rails and deep drawers that hold tons of stuff. I am very happy. if you look in Craigslist in the new furniture and in the antique section if you can find anything, any style, you just need to be patient.
I think the quality of the dressers at IKEA is hit and miss. I've never bought their cheapest line and have always been happy. I had one dresser (the predecessor to the Malm line) that did start to break down a little (the back piece kept falling off), but it was because it got moved 4 times over as many years. The drawers were fine. We currently have two Leksvik (?) dressers that have held up beautifully - and I have NEVER had a problem with IKEA dressers with shallow drawers. As a matter of fact, I'm always disappointed at the depth of the dresser drawers at higher end stores after having owned the IKEA dressers I have. I have always had tons of storage space.
