Reviving this gem as we're considering moving to Ashburn. DH works near the White House, and I WFH. DH would take public transit, either drive to Wiehle and metro or take the bus all the way in. Thoughts?

Loudoun county bus. I leave the house by 7, drive ~5 minutes to the lot, arrive in Pentagon City by 8:30. When I've had meetings in DC the commute's been about the same - the transfers are different. Leave work at 5, home by 7, sometimes a little earlier depending on which bus I catch in the afternoon.

Riders are generally friendly, the buses are coach buses. The other riders got a little testy the other day when the (new) driver missed the exit off 267, though.

It stinks, but it stunk more when I used to do the 980 from West Falls Church to Herndon/Monroe park and ride then drove the rest of the way home (another option).

Recommend paying extra (my bus is $2 each way with SmartTrip, but I don't think you get a transfer rate when you switch to the train) to get public transportation to bring you as close to home as possible.

Your biggest problem is the buses only run during rush hour, so if you need to get home outside of those times you're kind of SOL. I know, Commuter Connections exists, but I never seem to have the kind of notice they require to get a "guaranteed ride home" - though I'm signed up just in case.

My FIL used to drive into the city from Ashburn. he is one of those work hard/complain less types. Even he said it was a nightmare.

Reminds me of an old SNL skit about a game show involving driving directions in Boston -- apparently everyone uses landmarks instead of street names there.

But the correct answer to "How do you get to Roxbury?" is "You wouldn't wanna."

Bus to west falls church, then train. It can be done if you shift your hours early when you can.

There are express commuter buses that go from Loudoun to DC. My coworker takes one-says it is much nicer than a metro bus. The bus ride takes about 45 minutes, so then add on the drive to the lot from your house. There are worse commutes-I would do the bus but wouldn't do the drive in 1000 years.

stop for gas or mail or something every day at the airport, then you can legally use the HOV lanes.

Don't do it, unless you have no choice. In which case, suck it up, and tell yourself that someday you will move or get a new job, just not right now. Good luck to ya. Research some stress relief techniques.

50 is some sort of punishment. Don't do it, for God's sake don't do it. It sucks worse than 66.

267 is ok but you pay to play. 7 to 28 to 267 is somewhat better and not quite as pricey.

66 and 267 go HOV inside the Beltway. You can take Nutley south to 29 all the way into FCC, that isn't too bad, then you take Annandale over to 50 and then go in.

I live in Leesburg. The commute to DC would beat "being unemployed," but I wouldn't do it if you have other options.

You leave at the butt crack of dawn and take the toll road to 66 before HOV restrictions start. If you don't you get off the toll road and take the GW parkway which sucks balls if you're later than about 7:15. Or you get off the toll road and take 50 in. 50 sucks balls until you get past 7 corners.

Or you driver to a commuter parking lot and take the Loudoun County Connector.

You don't. You are not allowed to go into the big bad and dangerous city.
