i'll take it a step farther -- the kids probably shoul dhave been taken out of the "home" and adopted by parents who want them and would take care of them.

Perhaps -- just suppose -- that she was at work? Because "Welfare to Work" geniuses have mandated that one cannot "sit on one's ass" and collect welfare anymore." She can't by a stay at home mom and stay with her kids. She has to work. See, when one is poor, one can't SAHM. Because that equals sitting on one's ass. But when a poor woman goes to work, that means she doesn't love her children, and they should be adopted by someone who does.

i'll take the bait (not OP). I think there is plenty evidence of terribly parenting here -- 26 year old mom with five kids (the fifth grader wasn't home at the time of the fire) with at least three different last names living in a mobile home. mom not home when a fire started. ALSO bad parenting because where the heck is/are the father(s)?

be honest with yourself -- these kids weren't left alone for five minutes because of an emergency. that doesn 't mean she was out partying, either. regardless of why and how long they were alone, he fact is that these kids died alone and in a likely painful way. it IS tragic -- not only because these little kids died in a fire, but because they likley never had a chance from the start.

if we stopped trying to bend over backwards to make excuses for selfish people who make bad choices that directly affect people who have no other options (i.e. "parents" who have more kids than they can afford/take care of/want), the next generation might be able to rise out of rural or urban poverty.

She has 5 kids.

She was arrested pretty quickly so it would seem they knew she didn't leave them alone for a few minutes

Why is this a story about terrible parenting? It seems to be a tragedy. You are blaming the mother when you know nothing about why the children were alone -- whether they were alone for five minutes because of an emergency or all evening because she was partying.

Outside urban areas on the East Coast, I would venture to say this is the norm, not the exception. You are really pretty sheltered.

Something like this happened not too long ago when the mother (again, in her early 20's) was out partying and left her 18mo and 3yo home alone.

Of course, there was also a fire a few years ago in my town where the mother AND all 3 kids were found dead in a first floor bedroom because they were likely sleeping when the fire started.

Let's all check our smoke detectors tonight, ok?
