Our son was diagnosed with oral apraxia at 18 months, and then with more global dyspraxia at about 2 1/2 years old. His issues were mild to moderate and he is now almost seven.

These are interesting responses. I wonder if things have changed? DS, now nearly 8 yrs old, was dxd with apraxia at 19 month by Dr Marilyn Agin, who wrote The Late Talker (about apraxia). He had no words and no sounds other than uh until nearly 3 yrs, then got a few more, and finally started to communicate verbally at 4.

Agree with the PPs that many dev peds won't diagnose before age 3. Our SLP suspected our DS had apraxia when he was 26 months and it was confirmed by the dev ped at 38 months.

DS was diagnosed with a motor speech planning disorder at 20 months, and we were told he had a lot of signs of apraxia but that it was a little early to call it that. At 25 months, after 5 months of PROMPT therapy, we were told that it looks more and more likely that DS has apraxia but that we should see a dev ped for a formal diagnosis, which we have no need for at this point. As PP noted, DS has a ton of language but does a lot of groping and is very, very difficult to understand.

Many therapist will not diagnosis apraxia before 3, especially if the child has little speech. But if the child has a lot of speech but had the true groping than they can diagnose.

I was just wondering how early they can diagnosis this....how about motor planning issues?
