I agree. A ring to be worn day-in, day-out should be chosen by the person who will wear it.

What is a canary diamond?

I can understand if maybe you are traditional yourself and want to pick the actual ring rather than shopping together. But I do think it's not a bad idea to get some input on the basics. My now-DH broached with me general ideas on shape, single vs multi stone, and since he knew his budget what my preference was in balancing diamond size and quality within that price point.

I too don't like my engagement ring at all. Ask her or a good friend who can discreetly find out if you want to surprise her.

I don't/didn't care about engagement rings, DH could have popped the question with a cherio and I wouldn't have cared....or so I thought.

Until he showed me a ring BEFOREHAND, that he wanted to buy. My response?, "ugh I would never wear that". Because it was completely not my taste.

OP, I suggest you ask your girlfriend what she prefers before investing in a ring.

I don't like diamonds and I live in a sketchy neighborhood. I would not wear it. Point being, are you sure your girl wants a flashy ring?

If you are at the point where you are considering proposing, a basic conversation about "do you want a colored stone in your engagement ring?" seems like it wouldn't completely blow the surprise. My DH took months to get around to asking after buying my ring apparently.

i think if she were the colored diamond type, she'd make that kinda known? and I don't mean that in a bad way, more if she liked kinda trendy things vs traditional things etc. has she dropped any hints of any kind?

Oh please. My husband of many years STILL has absolutely no idea about my taste in jewelry. Good thing I love him lots, which is why we're married.

I agree that it's a good idea to ask her, or one of her friends.

Do you have a friend of hers you can ask? Personally, I wish my husband had consulted me on my engagement ring. Hate it. Tried to gently broach the topic of a swap and didn't go well. Result: I stopped wearing it after having kids.

I have the opportunity to buy a canary diamond engagement ring for my girlfriend. It's a great stone at a great price (a friend of a friend is a jeweler). The ring is beautiful. Just not sure if she would be happy with a canary diamond. Looking for opinions from some ladies about canary diamonds. Would you be happy with one as an engagement ring?
