Dear black and white friends,
While you guys were busy arguing about how to share the glass of water, I drank it...!
Sincerely,
Your Asian friend.

Thought affirmative action hurts Asians the most. The Supreme Court will be reviewing the policy this term. If it is reinstated, your offspring will be hurt by it. Unless you marry outside of your race or hide the fact DC is Asian.

If the supreme court outlaws all form of preference or diversity measures (race, gender, legacy, regional), the side effects maybe worst than the desired effects.
While the number of blacks admitted to top colleges will decrease from 6% to 2% (desired effect), the number of whites will also decrease from 50% to 25%(side effect). This looks like a scorched earth strategy.

So the Asians will be the majority at the best schools? Even still, they will be kept out of top management and executive positions by a legacy of whites in those positions.

The school is a public school in the US, paid for by US taxpayers. This is not a resource for the world. It is to educate and benefit US children and to make up for the past harms committed against their ancestors in the US.

It doesn't matter whether they are born in the US or immigrate last week. I am sure all of them are here legally and reside in the jurisdiction. That is the only requirement! What is becoming clear is that TJ due to its international reputation has become a magnet for very bright kids around the world and attracts global competition mainly from Asia.
With this global competition from the 1st or 2nd generation of Asian children the share of the "indigenous" population able to complete for TJ spots will keep decreasing.

Isn't the Supreme Court deciding a case where a white student sued because she didn't get into U of Texas but black students with lower scores were admitted? I think there was also a case where a white student sued because he wasn't admitted to a school where you must be of a certain race.

I've also heard that they've had to add an ESL/basic writing classes in the past few years to help out these kids who manage to get in but don't have the necessary English skills.

I would hope the admin is looking at the student data to see when a lot of these kids are arriving in the US. I'd also be curious to know if these are just rumors or if there's some merit to them.

Assuming this is true, so what? Do they not live here now? Are they don't entitled to the same opportunities as others living in the community?

An acquaintance from work used to volunteer to proctor the entrance exam (her kid graduated from TJ years ago), and she said that when filling in the test info, the students had to say whether they were a US citizen or not. In the room that she proctored in, 14 of the 22 kids were not US citizens. That doesn't say if they ever will be or not, but interesting either way.

In our area of the county which has lots of the minorities that aren't getting in (blacks/Hispanics), the successful TJ applicant is generally white, and has YEARS of grooming by parents via extracurricular activities, competitions, tutoring etc. They are very smart kids but they have been thoroughly groomed from the beginning of their school years by their driven parents.

Does it indicate whether the asians were born here or elsewhere? I feel that if they were born here then the rest of us just have to suck it up. But if they are recent immigrants then I would not be happy about it. Seems like there should be a limit to the number of foreign born students accepted to the school. It's not like the school gets international rate tuition or anything.

The number of Whites admitted to TJ dropped 50% in 5 years and the number of Blacks and Hispanics remain unchanged. I am not surprised by those numbers. Asians have been dominating math and sciences competitions. Without a doubt, if TJ had a blind admission based on test sores only the Asian population would swell to 80%. We can't blame the Asians... the rest of us need to catchup and compete harder.

Did FCPS release the math attainment statistics that they have released in previous years? Used to show how many candidates with Algebra1 vs Geometry vs >Geometry were admitted. If not, does anyone know why not?

Key comments:
[TJ admitted] 480 students out of more than 3,400 applicants [14%] in a selection process involving a standardized test, teacher recommendations, math and science grades and other measures ....

The percentage of Asian students and boys admitted ... rose this year, while the proportion of white students and girls fell .... About two-thirds of the incoming class is Asian, while about one-fourth is white. That’s a dramatic shift from five years ago, when white students made up more than half of TJ’s freshmen. (Countywide, about 19 percent of students are Asian and about 43 percent are white.) ... boys make up 59 percent of the freshman class.

The Class of 2016 includes seven black students and 13 Latinos — a total of 4 percent of all admitted students. (The two groups comprise 32 percent of students countywide.) ... More than 400 students from low-income families — who qualified for a reduced or waived admissions fee — applied to the school. Six were admitted — about 1 percent of the freshman class, compared with about 25 percent of kids living in poverty across Fairfax.
