Not PP but I have also put in recessed lighting. However, I was replacing a surface mounted fixture in the same location so already had a lighting circuit to use (ie didn't have to deal with the panel).
Cutting the holes is time consuming but not hard. Wiring the individual lights up together, is easy because wire is all color coded - as long as you know what the colors mean you are good to go. Putting them on a switch, also easy. BUT, big BUT here, we already had a circuit to use. OP if you are at all hesitant, please spend the $ for an electrician (or a close friend who has BTDT). Watch them closely and ask questions. Then next time you can DIY

there was no existing recessed lightings. you can get books from the libary or buy one with instruction. You need to wire it from the nearest outlet to put an additional outlet. Then you need to approximate where the recessed light will be. Then drill holes line up with wire.

OP here. We would loooove to do it ourselves but with the wiring it seemed beyond our skill set. Did you already have a ceiling light and/or switch? Did you follow particular instructions that you found somewhere? What took you the longest?

I know you asked how much would it cost for someone to do it. However, we did that ourselve for like around 6 lights, it was painful, but saved a lot of money. Drilling the holes for the recessed lights are the most time consuming part if you ended up drilling the wood stud instead because you have to fix it and all the hassles.

We did it in two days, material about $13 each light and $20 dollars for the wires and switch.

If there is no ceiling lights at all, then the electrician will have to run a new line up from your power box in the basement. We had this done recently - I think after labor and supplies, it was about 200/light (although we got more expensive, super efficient lights). We did 10 lights.
