I often read here, and at another forum, where people write that they made a conscious choice to not contribute fully to their child's college tuition, because they want them to learn reponsibiity or have ownership of their experience. At the othr forum, where it's not anonymous, it's clear to me that many of the people saying this actually have limited income, and wouldn't be able to pay 100% of their child's expenses, even if they wanted to.
I have a limited income. I plan to help with my child's college tuition and have been saving aggressively, but my child will still need to choose carefully, have a job both summer and during the school year, take loans, earn scholarships, join ROTC, etc . . . to get a college education. I don't feel bad about this, and I'm sure he'll learn from the experience. At the same time if I win the next mega millions, or wake up in some weird time warp where I end up a big law lawyer, I would make different choices. I'd encourage him to look at expensive private schools, to study abroad and take unpaid internships, and to refrain from working during the school year unless it's directly related to his career. I'd pay 100% of tuition, room, board, and books, and give him a lump sum to cover expenses during the school year. Not unlimited funds, and he'd need to budget, but a generous amount so he could spring for pizza with his buddies, take a road trip to see another city, etc . . .
So, I'm curious. What do you plan on paying for, and what would you pay for if you were "set for life"?
