Isn't that the purpose of take-out??? So you don't have to tip the delivery the guy? So, save your tip money and walk in the store and get it yourself.

What about a hostess who acts as cashier when you're picking up your food? We often get sushi takeout and it seems like there is a hostess, yet often one of the waitresses is at the front/cash register also when I'm picking up.

If the bartender has to stop what he's doing to assemble my order, find extra ketchup, check for knives and forks, etc., then ring me up, yes, I'll tip -- he's paying attention to me and making sure I'm satisfied instead of dealing with his other customers.

Do I tip the deli guy, the ice cream scooper, the barista, etc., whose job it is to wait on each person in line, one at a time? No.

TIPPING FOR TAKE OUT
Should I tip when picking up a take-out order? And if so, how much?

TOM SIETSEMA :
I always tip for take-out and the amount typically depends on the size and cost of my order. For carry-out that costs, say, $20, I'd probably thank the server/bar tender/hostess with a couple of bucks.

In anticipation of those chatters who are apt to disagree with me on this matter, let me just say that I like to reward whoever has taken the time to jot down my request, make sure it's correct, throw in the proper utensils and so forth.

so we should reward people for performing their job? Is this where the sense of entitlement has stemmed from in our society?

Normally I don't but have started to tip at 2 Amys because it seems like the servers end up doing the work of packing up and taking payment for carryout orders.

No - would you tip when picking up a sandwich from a deli for lunch?

I usually give a dollar or two for all the work that went into the packing it up part.

I picked up last night at a sit-down restaurant (on vacation) where meals for 4 came to about $80. Takeout is nicely packaged and given to the customer at the bar by a bartender, who goes back to the kitchen to pick it up. Should we have tipped? DH says no. What about when you pick up from a cashier, such as at PF Changs?
