Do high school coaches typically help guide a student with recruitment, even if not one of the superstars?

PP -- I'm the one whose DD was recruited to an Ivy as well as several of her club teammates. We got ordered several good books from Amazon. Type in "athletic recruiting"...there's a good one in the Yellow book "dummies" series...(believe it or not!).

Those online forms are really looked at by the coaches...fill them out for every school your child is interested in exploring. Email the coaches, and when you plan to visit a campus...email the coach and ask to meet. They may have you send a video before they meet.

"Official visits" are paid for by the schools. Under NCAA rules, a child is limited to how many official visits he/she may make...but there is no limit on unofficial visits (the ones you pay for).

Coaches are impressed when kids "take the bull by the horn" and ask to meet them for unofficials. You need to look at athletic calendars to make sure your visit is when a coach is away. Good luck! Any more questions... feel free to ask.

Not the OP but I am also interested in understanding how to go about it for cross country/track. Don't care about scholarships so D3 may be preferable. Most colleges seem to have recruiting forms that you submit. Is this at all effective? When we do college visits do we ask to meet the coach or do you need to be invited? Academics are very strong so no issue there.

What sport? I have a lot of experience from my DD's experience and her friends/teammates.
