Our public school has a little differentiation in K and more in 1st grade so some moms place their older kids in private for kindergarten. For us, social issues were more important and we just did a couple of afternoon enrichment activities to make it a more interesting year. I have friends who had their early October kids skip a year and its been fine for them too. Also we feel sports are too competitive in our area and my DC would have given up if having to play with classmates a year ahead.

DD was to turn 6 in early November and had already completed Montessori Kindergarden. Our school allowed testing and the Principal suggested 1st grade placement. There have been some pluses and minuses overall - is a little immature but that is a personality issue rather than an age issue. Doing well academically and not standing out socially - as far as I know.

My daughter turned 6 in November of her K year, and she was always one of the oldest in her school. Perhaps it varies by school, but it's been several years, and she's always one of the oldest in her class. I've hated that she is the oldest. She was fully developed before all of her friends. Do what is right for your child.

This is us as well. My daughter turned 6 in August before starting K. There are a bunch of kids older than she is and a couple who are already 7. I'm in DDs class fairly often helping out - yes there are some silly boys but it is definitely not the case of my daughter standing out in the least. The girls are a little better behaved on a whole. Academically in her class they are fairly close in ability with one or two outliers. I can't imagine your daughter standing out because she might be one of the older students.

OP here, I am asking because of the comments people have made that I should look into private school instead because of this thought on girls maturing faster or sooner. It keeps coming up so my question is is it THAT odd to not go the private route for post cutoff kids?

Not sure why every one is holding their kids back these days, but there is certainly nothing wrong if that's where your DC falls by his/her birthday.

My DD is early November, so she'll be 6 for most of Kindergarten too. Someone's gotta be on the older end!

My son is also October 1st. He will just miss the FFX County cut off by one day. I am okay with that, as I've always heard that boys mature slower than girls. However, if he had been a girl, I still wouldn't have pushed to get around the cut off. I figure that being older won't hurt anything.

Not sure what you are looking for but there will be plenty of kids in the class who are 6 at the start of the school year typically.

They must be 5 years old by Sept. 30th. Doesn't matter if the child is 6 years old and in kindergarten.

I'm not sure what you are asking. Oct 1st turning 6 is in the standard age range for kindergarten. Why would that be an issue?
