If you aren't fired today I'd say start looking for a new job. Mostly because no one deserves to be treated badly and you deserve better. Keep your chin up, take the high road, and you'll come out on top. Enjoy the vacation.

Is there anything in their systems you need? Personal emails or say a document or contact list? In some offices once fired you instantly lose computer access so if that might be a concern you could consider planning ahead.

I agree with you about housecleaning. I don't agree with you about lying to your family -- folks may get suspicious if you just up and leave without a job in the wings. At least I know my wife would get suspicious, and I don't want to get in the realm of getting up pretending to go to a job.

Happened to me TWICE! Both times, it was for the best, and the next job was so much better. Hang in there.

if you are fired, generally can collect unemployment. not so if you quit.

I'd tidy up like a PP suggested. Any last phone calls you need to make? Any personal stuff on your computer? Any particular thanks you'd like to give? How's your standing in the coffee club? The admin birthday next week, did you already contribute? Anyone eyeing your computer chair?

Whatever your version of housecleaning is, get to it.

My work is generally research-based, so I would have memos regarding next steps at the ready so that the people relying on me wouldn't get screwed in the process. I also wouldn't want to give the boss the opportunity to badmouth my level of productivity or leave her able to scapegoat me in any way. I'd package files and back-up data to pass along to partners and assistants, along with thanks.

I was let go from a contract recently and just hate that I wasn't able to distribute some of the items I'd been planning to just days later. It chafes. I was also unable to respond to a colleague's request and I feel awful about that.

The director waited until I'd gone home to send an email and paid out the entire six months of the contract term. Of course she never told me why I'd been fired. I think they just decided to transform a (less-expensive) part-time they hired after me to full-time.

All I'm saying is maybe closure would be a good thing.

Honestly, it was much much better than figuring out how to give your notice.

In my field of work everything is so personal that giving notice is just gut wrenching!

Got an ominous email from my crap-tactic new boss. She's pretty much had it in for me since she started 3 months ago. I'm actually on my 3rd boss in 20 months, but who's counting? My company sucks for a multitude of reasons, and it will be so much better for my mental health, because this job really has sucked the life out of me. My life will not end, we save enough that we can live for over a year on one income, so I know we are super lucky, but it still feels really crappy to get fired, right? I've never been fired before, so I don't know, but I think I will know in about 12 hours.

This is the only place outside my immediate family that I can admit that I will get fired, so its been cathartic.
