This sounds like a reasonable approach.

Please don't overthink this. I sent a decline via email and never received a response. I took care to word it nicely and assumed that I would get a, well I don't know what I thought I'd get, but not *crickets*. Take it from me, say no thanks and keep it moving!

Dear Admissions Officer:

We wanted to thank you for the time you spent considering our application. Your decision to accept our DC shows significant insight into what an amazing person he/she is and will develop into. Unfortuntaley due to the high number of acceptances we received this year we will have to decline your offer for a spot in the kindergarten class. You have an outstanding school but there are better ones. I hear there are drug problems at your institution and that bullying is a big issue. Also statistically it seems that the acceptance rate into the best universities are lower than our chances if we went to public school. So in summary we wish you the best of luck.

This is what waitlists are for! Schools turn down amazing students! They are not going to be hurt or feel rejected!

The number of posts on this is frightening, it shows how much power people give these schools.

Some posters are jerks.

OP, if you have something constructive to say to them (you don't offer advanced math, or my kid wants to study chinese) then say that. Otherwise, a simple "thank you but we decline" is fine.

You can always say you know this is the right school for your child but you're going in a different direction and you've made that decision based on factors that will not serve your child well in the long run.

How did you get this far in life without knowing how to do that?

Thank you for the offer of admission to (school) for our daughter (name). We have accepted an offer at (school) so our daughter will not be attending (school). Thank you for your time throughout the admissions process.


Frankly it doesn't matter if you are declining an offer at a sought after school or another school. Simply decline and move on.

Really? Tell them your child isn't coming, that is it. You can even say regretfully, but this isn't hard.
