Something is definitely wrong - I had a house with a heat pump for 12 years and never experienced this. This doesn't sound normal. Good luck.

OP: From what I understand, and I'm still muddling through this, it can be tricky b/c the nights are cool and you can confuse the unit or something if you leave it on "cool" while it's actually cool outside?

But I think the freon's the issue. Same thing happened last year when we first moved in. They suspected a leak but couldn't find it.

So here's the 65,000 question (hopefully not literally): Will the home warranty cover it or not? Fun times. At least it's not 95 degrees as I try to sort this out. Also happy I discovered it before it defrosted and soaked my carpet.

it's probably low on freon due to a leak somewhere in the system.

sounds like low freon. The only time ours froze was when the freon was low. Although it could also freeze up if there is poor air circulation. So also check that the filter is clean. Turn off the system to let it thaw. Call a HVAC company to take a look.

so, we foolishly turned the thermostate from "heat" to "cool" last week when it got up in the 80s. Now the heat pump is a block of ice. We've never had a heat pump before (been in this house less than a year) so what do we do now?
