PP, are you sure there are no reading groups? I have never heard of an MCPS elementary school without differentiated reading groups. DD has differentiated math groups within her classroom too, although I have heard that not all schools are doing that.

We just moved to the area and my child is attending Carderock Springs. We moved to this area after hearing that MoCo public schools are one of the best school systems in the country.His class has 26 students and one teacher. Reading is not divided by ability- rather it is a heterogeneous mix of students where some kids can read chapter books while some are learning to read sight words. Most of their dedicated reading period consists of students reading books to themselves for half an hour and then reading books with a buddy for the rest of the hour. I am concerned that my son, who is more advanced in reading and math, is not challenged and is very bored with school. I know of some other students that are in the same boat. Is it standard for MoCo public schools to not have reading/math groups divided according to level and guided reading groups on a weekly basis? Does anyone else have a similar experience?

Why do you prefer Whitman over Churchill? Can you elaborate?

You can see some differences in them on the Montgomery Co. Schools website. You can see demographics, test scores, read the parents survey results, etc. We're in Bradley Hills, but would be happy with any of them. We prefer being in the Whitman district to Churchill though, which would rule out Seven Locks. We've chosen not to look for homes in Carderock due to increased commuting time. There are so many determinants to look at.

Bradley Hills is scheduled to be done in time for the new school year in September 2013.

As of a few weeks ago it hasn't started and with antoher school slated to go into Radnor right after them, they may have to move back into BH with a lot of construction to be completed.

Carderock Springs & Seven Locks are in nice new buildings and probably underutilized. I think Bradley Hills is scheduled for renovation soon - it's overcrowded now, I think.

One big difference is that Seven Locks feeds into Cabin John MS and then Churchill. The other 3 feed into Pyle and then Whitman.

We know people at all of the schools and everyone seems pretty happy. Don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

All of these schools are great. You might want to consider how big a school you are wanting. I really like the small school feel at a place like Carderock, however that is not what other people like. You really can't go wrong!

Hi All - Moving to the area soon and found homes that feed into the following elementary schools. I am sure they are all great, but have different things that make them special. Could you tell me what is unique about these schools and perhaps make them different from each other. Coming from out of the area so I truly appreciate any insight.:
