There are many great suggestions above. You might want to consider Salem College (Winston-Salem, NC) and Tulane Universiity.

Birmingham-Southern College (my alma mater). Small liberal arts college in Birmingham. Methodist-affiliated, but not churchy at all. Lots of kids go to grad school (med and law). Other similar colleges include Millsaps (Jackson, MS), Rhodes (Memphis, TN). Agnes Scott in Atlanta if you have a girl (have a relative there now having a great experience and she is from New York). Sewanee in rural Tennessee is supposed to be good as well.

I know several people who love Sewanee.

Mississippi University for Women--first public women's college in the nation...128 years old but has admitted men since 1984.

Located in Columbus, MS near the Columbus Air Force Base. Nicknamed "The W,", the university has a reputation of "private school education at a public school value." Also, consistently rated by US News as best value among Southern liberal arts schools. Top rated nursing school in South.

Also, my alma mater! Can you tell I love my college!?! I'm still in touch with my professors too (graduated in 1998!). Check it out!

Thanks, we are thinking in terms of the Deep South. I hadn't heard of those colleges before we will include them in our search.
