Simple - add up your expenses and subtract from your income. Subtract fixed expenses first, then you can figure out food, investments, savings, etc. You can do it in Excel too.
Of course there's an app for everything if you have an iPhone. I just started trying that out rather then my many scribbled notes (mainly as an easy way to keep track of expenses like food shopping and target).

You'd have to start by providing some basic information:
-- Take home pay
-- Number of examptions claimed on paycheck
-- Number of people in house.
Fixed expenses:
-- Rent or mortgage
-- Car payment
-- Utilities
-- Day care/camps
-- Pets?
Discretionary/elastic expenses:
-- Cable/satellite TV
-- Clothing
-- Groceries
-- Eating out
-- Entertainment

Subject: Please help me with my budget
I am figuring out our budget/expenses and am trying to figure out how much we put in savings every month, including retirement and just regular savings. I am math-challenged. I'd like to figure this out both based on gross and net income. Can someone walk me through this or point me to some resource that can? Hope this question makes sense. Thanks!
