That bare leg look in the winter is so 1992. Who wants to see your goosey legs all winter?

That I know, girls with bare legs but a nice professional suit, a knee - or a bit above - skirt, have nothing wrong or unprofessional, especially in we are in summer and there are 1000 degrees outside it's just human. You can be as unprofessional even with fully covered legs and with pants. A pair of black thick heeled low cut heels or slingbacks are also perfectly appropriate.
I don't think it's unprofessional to show bareleg even considering many men has a fetish for hoses, so that can be just an excuse, and it actually ought to be quite the opposite if the point was appearing too much daring and flaunting.
As a boy, though, i wonder how is it more comfortable for your feet. Yes your legs get aired, but along with them your also bare your feet, so are they really more comfortable than when some fabric is between them and the shoe to minimize friction?
In summer I try to go sockless with loafers and shorts, but I always end up putting on a pair of dark ankle socks just for comfort, at least most of the time (mostly in the evening cause I don't want sock tan), but as a boy my ankles don't matter so much.

I'd go by how your supervisors dress, permitted or not. In my office (law, government), most of the attorneys wear suits, but some women wear business dresses and such. I wear suits and conservative accessories because I think people take me more seriously that way. Years ago when I worked at a law firm in NYC that was business casual, one of the other women attorneys pointed out that she always dressed more business-like so as not to be confused with a secretary. A result of past sexism? Maybe, but I still follow that advice.

Oh, relax. He didn't use the word 'ladies' - I did. And I don't see anything wrong with it. And yes, he did mention the dress code for men. That was actually how the conversation started.

19:59 - it actually wasn't a rebuke or a message. We were just talking about the dress code. I expressed my surprise and noted that I am basically never in compliance, and he said that he is relaxed about the code but that's just the official line.

So you understand that he was sending you a direct message, right? If there's only 2 women and you routinely have bare legs, he's telling you to stop. (I wasn't entirely sure from your post if you were taking this as a rebuke or finding it funny/surprising)

I am facing the same situation at a new job. Except I also have to wear a suit jacket. Not even Michelle Obama dresses that way every day. It's ridiculous and demeaning, but I need this job to feed my family, so if the fellas at the top want to dictate my dress code, then I have to just deal. Men have to wear suits, so there is a dress code for everyone, but the women's dress code is stuck in 1982.

I don't know. It's 2012. It's not like any of us are guaranteed jobs through retirement, the economy is immune, and we've gotten rid of at-will employment.

I'm fine to check with management's lead, as long as they are fine to keep signing my paycheck.

I'd say not until someone in a more senior position goes bare legged. Unless you are a named partner, in which case you get to set the standard.

I would not do this. Technically, it's not spring yet, it's just a warm snap. In a law firm I think it would look unprofessional.
