That's crazy. I've never heard of a program like this only being open to some of the students, when there are no prequalifying criteria. Did you complain?

There are lots of after-school programs that are first-come-first-served.

To the OP, Which school in FCPS is this. DS is still young, but interested in science. Just wanted to find out, if this opportunity would be available to him in 4th grade.

I did science olympiad for several years as a kid. I loved it - it is a fabulous program.

We did it a couple years ago. The time committment was about 2-4 hours a week. The issue I had was that I was expected to coach one of my dd's events...and was assigned something I knew nothing about. It was really hard to coordinate schedules with the other two kids dd was paired up with so that we could meet. I know that some schools organize it differently so this may just be the way our school did it.

I helped out with a middle school team. You might want to see how the team was organized and what sort of time commitment was involved.

Just signed up my 4th grade DS for Science Olympiad. We know nothing about it, thought it sounded interesting. Does anyone know about it here? Details have been vague so far. All we've been told is that there will a few teams and within the teams they'll pair the kids off to work on research. Hoping DS won't be over his head. He's bright, curious, and enjoys science, so we thought he might like it. Is it as intense as the initial email from the coordinator has made it out to be?
