It is a good, solid school. I highly doubt that it would close down. But, to play devil's advocate, let's assume that it did. Where would the children go? WolfTrap? Cunningham Park? Marshall Road? Louise Archer? They are all very good schools, even if there are some lower-income families feeding into some of them. The Town of Vienna is a great town to live. The only negative that I know about Vienna elementary is that becuase of its size, it doesn't have as many after school programs as some neighboring schools. For example, the Flex program (foreign language after school) didn't exist there until a few years ago. I'm not sure if there are Girl Scout troops there. I know they sometimes join troops at Marshall Road or other schools. They did recently get a new principal, so I am not sure how that has played out. My kids go to a neighboring elementary school, and I would not hesitate for a minute to have my children go to Vienna Elementary.

If you were at Vienna ES, I think you'd only go to Jackson MS if you were in-boundary for Thoreau and in the AAP program, since Thoreau MS doesn't have an AAP center. Kilmer MS has an AAP center, so the AAP kids in the two or so neighborhoods at Vienna ES assigned to Kilmer MS/Marshall HS (Williams Hill and Tysons Woods) just stay at Kilmer.

The school has a nice playground and it is also near the Vienna community center which has a teen center for 6th-8th graders.

All the people I know who have kids at Vienna Elementary like it a lot. Many AAP kids though do leave and go on to Louise Archer in 3rd grade. And then for middle school the area is split as well between Luther Jackson, Kilmer, and Thoreau. Most of the kids in the boundary go on to Madison, but a few go onto Marshall.

According to the CIP, the renovations started in 2005 (don't know when they finished):

Either way, the point is that FCPS isn't going to close down a school that was recently renovated, even if it has a relatively small enrollment. FCPS did recently close down another small elementary school - Clifton - but that was before it was scheduled to get renovated. And any redistricting likely would send more students to Vienna ES than send Vienna ES students somewhere else.

No reason at all to think that would happen. It was renovated in 2005. Only thing that might happen within next few years is that a small number of kids living in the Town of Vienna who attend Freedom Hill ES may get reassigned to Vienna ES, but that's far from certain.

We are thinking of of putting an offer in on a house in this area. When I researched Vienna Elementary school, it appears to be a very small school. Is there any talk of rezoning or combining this school with Cunninham Park or Marshall Road. I would like to hear any experiences parents have had with this school- good or bad. Thank you.
