I was able to do this career change for a few reasons:
my kids were already in school full time when I entered my doctoral program. Before that I took some part-time psych classes at night and in the mornings when my youngest was in preschool.
My DH is self-employed and works from home, so he's shouldered a lot of the burden of picking up kids and being around in the afternoons when I've been away at school or working.
We were fortunate to have saved quite a bit from earlier years when I practiced, and when our investments were still doing well. However, in the past few years things got more difficult and we've drained a lot of our savings, sad to say. We are in the process of rebuilding, which means also moving to a smaller, less expensive home. But we're getting by. I have a full-time job now and while the salary is modest (under 100k) the benefits are good. Also, I LOVE the work. It is so much more fulfilling to me than law ever was.
